OBS + Grouped

Share audio directly from Logic/Ableton/etc or any program on your computer + add multiple camera angles and more!

Updated over 2 months ago

By following the steps below, you can use the Grouped livestream in an unlimited number of ways - such as sharing any program/screen including the audio, adding multiple camera angles, and whatever else you want!

The process is tedious to set up and run the first time, but after that, you can use the same settings to go live in under a minute!

Step 1 - DOWNLOAD PROGRAMS

  1. OBS - download for free on whatever system you use.

  2. Blackhole Mac 16ch (or Blackhole Windows) - you can download it for FREE by clicking “I can’t afford to donate”, then enter your email, click the link, and download the 16ch version.

*after downloading & installing these programs, you will have to restart your computer

Step 2 - SET UP COMPUTER AUDIO (Mac)

*you can click this link to see the steps below with screenshots if you need to

2a. Open Audio Midi Setup

Use Spotlight (command+space) and type Audio Midi Setup. Click on the Audio Midi Setup app to open

2b. Open Audio Devices Window

If the Audio Devices window does not immediately appear when opening Audio MIDI Setup select Audio Devices from the Windows drop down menu in Audio MIDI Setup.

2c. Create Multi-Output Device

In the lower left hand corner of the Audio Devices click the + icon. Select Create Multi-Output Device

2d. Select Output Devices

In the new Multi-Output device you just created select the audio devices that you want to output audio. It is highly recommended you enable Drift Correction for all devices except the Clock Source device.

⚠️ IMPORTANT: the Built-in Output (sometimes called MacBook Pro Speakers or similar) must be enabled and listed as the top device / primary device / clock device in the Multi-Output. If BlackHole is listed first simply uncheck and recheck the box under Use to change the order. After you put the Macbook speakers at the top, and BlackHole as the second speaker, you can add any headphones or other speakers you want to be able to listen to

2e. Set Audio Output to Multi-Output Device

Right-click on your Multi-Output device and select Use This Device For Sound Output. Audio should now be playing through your speakers, through BlackHole, and whatever other devices you want.

2f. (Optional) Mute Your Laptop Speakers

If you don’t want the audio to play through your computer speakers (which can cause an echo when using headphones / external speakers or when using an external microphone), then click on the Built-In / Macook Speakers audio input and drag the volume to the left to 0

Step 3 - SET UP OBS

3a. Add Your Audio Output Capture

Click the "+" button at the bottom & FIRST, you must add an "Audio Output Capture" and set the device as BlackHole 16ch.

*this may appear under "Deprecated at the bottom"

3b. Add Your Program(s) To Screen Share

Click the "+" button again and choose "macOS Screen Capture" then "Create New" and then you can select under method to just choose to share one application or your entire screen.

*in the example below, I wanted to share Canva including the audio from the video

3c. Add Your Camera(s) & Microphone

Click the "+" button again, then "Audio Input Capture" for your microphone and "Video Capture Device" for any of your cameras

*in the below example, I have added 2 different camera angles as well as a YETI microphone to use as my audio

***you can rearrange your Sources which allows you to make sure your screen sharing is at the front of the screen

3d. Change Your OBS Monitoring Device

Click OBS in the top left menu bar, and click the following:
"Preferences" --> "Audio" --> turn "Global Audio Devises" to "Disabled" --> scroll down under "Advanced" and change your "Monitoring Device" to BlackHole 16ch

3e. Start Your Virtual Camera

On the far right side of the control panel, in the middle next to the gear icon, click "Start Virtual Camera"

Step 4 - LIVE STREAM ON GROUPED

Once you have everything set up, you are good to go!

Just start your Grouped livestream and in the bottom left your camera and microphone will be off to start.

Click the three dots next to the camera icon, and set "OBS" as your camera input. Then click the camera icon to show your camera.

Next you'll repeat those steps for the microphone by clicking the 3 dots next to your microphone & choosing "BlackHole ch16" for your microphone input then unmuting your microphone. (your speakers can be set as either BlackHole ch16 or your headphones)

If you want to double check all of your settings in Grouped, click Audio Settings at the bottom

ALL FINAL SETTINGS

4a. Final Grouped Settings
